They are students who wish to educate and develop themselves but cannot because their limited financial resources. People living in remote areas where a lack or complete absence of an educational system makes it difficult to get an education and travel is not favorable because of their responsibilities or financial issues.
Non-traditional students include a greater percentage of part-time enrollments and delayed enrollment past one's high school graduation. People who are working full time and cannot afford to leave their job in pursuit of an education are also classified as non-traditional students. Even professionals who already have attained a degree and have a job but cannot further their education.
Adult learners are generally older, may have considerable working experience, and may also have family and other non-work related responsibilities. Because of their age, knowledge, and experience, adult learners have different orientations and outlook than other students.
Distance and online learning and education programs are gaining worldwide popularity and importance.
Through the use of new technology and resources, online learning programs make it possible for non-traditional students, to reach their educational goals. Even with issues of access and affordability in the developed world, the possibility of obtaining a college degree is not out of the question for most in those countries.  For many, however, education is far from a given; millions of people in developing nations are unable to attain higher education.
Online education today can be as attributed as good as classroom education, online college degrees are substantial and are learned through an interactive learning experience that’s also rewarding. Today’s virtual classrooms are interactive and use the power of the internet to have a collaborative multimedia experience where non-traditional students discover exciting learning opportunities. Online learning appeals to non-traditional students for different reasons. Most are busy with full-time jobs and cannot attend school full time, and want to be able to have the flexibility to learn anytime and anywhere.
Others want to earn an online degree because they are interested in a program in an online school instead of the programs offered to them locally.  The number of students enrolling in online learning is steadily increasing while only a smaller number of students are opting for other distance education mediums.

Online Floral Design Schools with Course and Class Info

Floral designers work with live and silk flowers and greenery to create arrangements for events and general use. Online colleges offer floral design programs, including certificates and career diplomas. When choosing an online floral design school, individuals should explore the awards granted, the various costs and the similarities between programs.

How to Select an Online Floral Design School

Award Levels

When individuals consider online programs for floral design, individuals should consider the type of degree or certificate they wish to earn. Regardless of the award level, programs require that students have a high school diploma prior to admission.

The Inclusive Design Research Centre Is Making Learning Better for Everyone

Have you ever thought about how a blind person might use the Internet? What about a deaf person, or someone without the manual dexterity to manipulate a mouse and keyboard? As the focus of our digital lives moves away from being all about entertainment and becomes increasingly important for business and other tasks, how can we make sure some folks aren't being left out? The Inclusive Design Research Center is already taking things like this into consideration.
By Sarah Wright

What Is Inclusive Design?

When you think about design, you probably think about the aesthetic and practical considerations that are part of the process. What you may not think of, though, is the consideration of who will use what is being designed, and how. As any left-handed person can tell you, products and tools aren't always designed with everyone in mind. Inclusive design seeks to change this by incorporating a consideration of human diversity into the design process. But rather than focusing on physical products, inclusive design focuses on making digital materials more accessible.
Inclusive design is similar to universal design in that both schools seek to improve accessibility through design. However, inclusive differs from universal in that inclusive design focuses on digital creations, and wants to address a wider range of disabilities and differences than universal design.

About the Inclusive Design Research Centre

The Inclusive Design Research Centre (IDRC) is an academic division of the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD). OCAD is located in Toronto, Canada. The IDRC works to promote design that doesn't inherently exclude people with certain disabilities. Through research and development, the center creates digital design products that are compatible with people of any ability, language, culture, gender or age.
While working to define and promote inclusive design, the IDRC advocates for inclusive design techniques to be incorporated into standard web development. To this end, interested designers can take a free online course about the how and why of web accessibility. The IDRC also offers a master's program in inclusive design for design students who want to focus on ensuring that the digital future doesn't exclude people with disabilities.
If you are interested in learning more about inclusive design, you can visit the IDRC website. Additionally, the IDRC supports and participates in a variety of open informational techniques, including open access publishing. The center has made information about inclusive design easy to access in order to further the goal of making the digital world open and available to all kinds of people.
The push for accessibility goes beyond design - accessibility in sports is also an important issue.

Learn about online diploma programs in floral design. Continue reading for information on online courses, career outlook, salary and continuing education.

Online Diploma in Floral Design Overview

Online diploma programs in floral design are relatively uncommon. When online programs are available in this field, they're typically only offered at private, for-profit schools. These programs prepare participants to care for and arrange flowers. Students also learn design concepts and styles, characteristics of different flowers and business strategies. Related programs include studies in horticulture, floral design management and floristry.

Program Information and Requirements

Since students complete the program entirely on their own schedule, the time it takes to finish an online program varies. However, such programs can be completed in as little as 7-12 months. Students complete the assignments at home, without having to worry about being rushed or held back by others. These online programs typically don't have any in-person requirements. The only technical requirement is generally a computer with high-speed Internet access. The modules may arrive in the mail, along with books and design tools. Online help is also available for those who need it.

List of Common Floral Design Courses

The courses in an online floral design program prepare students for all aspects of the floral design business. Students study the ins and outs of caring for plants, designing floral arrangements, using real and artificial flowers in designs, creating arrangements for special occasions and even running a floral business.

Basics of Floral Design

This course covers the history of floral design and provides information about working as a floral designer. It also introduces different types of flowers and foliage.

Technique and Style in Floral Design

Students discover how to balance color, proportion and negative space in flower arrangements for traditional and contemporary design styles. The course focuses on the elements of design as a guiding principle in floral design.

Creating Wedding Arrangements

The class addresses methods for setting prices, helping brides meet their budgets and choosing color themes. Participants also learn how to create bouquets, reception arrangements, boutonnieres and corsages.

Artificial Flowers and Potted Plants

This course addresses the trend of using potted plants, cacti and artificial flowers in arrangements. It also covers methods for storing artificial flowers, caring for potted plants and drying flowers.

Floral Design Business

Individuals who are interested in starting their own businesses learn how to purchase merchandise, market products, set prices, select a location, analyze competitors and manage employee relations. They also learn how to secure funds, work with floral suppliers and deliver excellent customer service.

Career Information for Graduates

Graduates can become floral designers for floral shops, gift shops, grocery stores or gardening stores, or they can start their own businesses. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projected that between 2008 and 2018, employment of floral designers would decrease by three percent. Part of this decrease could be due to the competitive prices and convenience offered by many grocery stores, which also offer simpler designs that require fewer designers. Grocery stores and Internet floral shops are expected to have good employment opportunities. As of May 2011, the median annual salary for floral designers was $23,600, according to the BLS.

Continuing Education Information

Campus-based associate's and bachelor's degree programs are available in floral design, horticulture and floral design management for those who wish to seek further education. The American Institute of Floral Designers offers the Certified Floral Designer designation to those who wish to demonstrate their professional achievements as floral designers. This credential can be earned by meeting education or work experience requirements, then passing an examination that includes a written component and a floral arranging component.

Floral Design Online and At-Home Training Options

Floral design careers offer creative outlets for those who also enjoy planning, organization and routine. Online courses and training programs are available through private organizations and community colleges. Students learn the art of creating arrangements with form, structure, color, fragrance and height. Professional accrediting exams are offered through the American Institute of Floral Designers.

Online Floral Design Training

Individuals can participate in online floral design training through a program with multiple courses or a single course with multiple lessons. They traditionally learn about flowers and plants and then go on to study specific techniques for special occasions such as wedding bouquets or funeral arrangements. They also learn about business management styles, such as starting their own companies or learning to negotiate with vendors or customers when buying and pricing flowers. Training may result in a certificate or diploma; the American Institute of Floral Designers confers Certified Floral Designer certification on those who complete training and education and then prove their skills through both an exam and live demonstration.

Class Topics

Floral arrangements are not just seen as decorative objects, but as pieces of art. A main focus with all courses is the aesthetic appeal for arrangements. Lessons address shapes, colors, height, balance and scale. Students learn how to use live, faux and dried flowers to create varying aesthetic styles. Courses may also cover flowers as fashion accessories or aspects of interior decor. Common topics are:
  • Wedding arrangements
  • Wearable flowers
  • Special occasion arrangements
  • Holiday flowers
  • Sympathy flowers
  • Staging and props
  • Floral business

Online Course Content Delivery

Students can complete coursework at night, during the weekends or on holidays. Some lessons are taught through video, while others rely on textbooks and other materials. Enrollment costs may or may not incorporate all supplies; for example, students may need to purchase their own live flowers to practice and complete arrangements. Participants may demonstrate their acumen by completing exams online or they may submit photos and evidence of their design skills. Some in-person participation, such as attending workshops, may be necessary.

Floral Designer Career Outlook

Median wages of floral designers totaled roughly $23,000 each year as of 2010-11, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov). The same source stated that steady employee turnover keeps jobs available, and three percent job growth in the field from 2008-2018 was anticipated.
